Kabul: Recent statistics released by the World Food Programme (WFP) highlight the dire situation in Afghanistan, where three million children are currently facing malnutrition. On Friday, May 10, the WFP shared on its social media platform X that they can only provide support to one out of every three children.

The WFP underscores that the reduction in aid directly impacts Afghan children, stressing the urgent need for sustainable financing to address their plight. Last year, the United Nations health section reported that 1.2 million women in Afghanistan suffered from malnutrition, with expectations of further increases this year, as stated by Mona Sheikh, the head of nutrition at WFP. Despite an estimated 3 million children requiring assistance, only 1.6 million are projected to receive aid.

While these figures emerge, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) warns that 23.7 million people in the country will require immediate humanitarian assistance in 2024. Despite a reduction in conflict, the need remains severe, with 5.9 million women and 5.4 million men among those in need of aid.
